MITRE is a United States not for profit corporation that works in the public interest, best known for operating several federally funded research and development centers that support US government agencies in areas such as defense, aviation, healthcare, homeland security, and cybersecurity.
Originally spun out of MIT Lincoln Laboratory in 1958 to provide engineering expertise for the US Air Force, MITRE now provides systems engineering, research, and technical guidance across many domains, acting as an independent, objective advisor rather than a commercial vendor.
Not an acronym: although many mistakenly believe it stands for “Massachusetts Institute of Technology Research & Engineering” or similar phrases, the organization has consistently denied that it is an acronym.
